5 Things You Never Knew About Homeopathy

Updated: May 3

  1. Homeopathy is used by royals, celebrities and prominent figures around the world.

This gentle system of medicine was once considered the medicine of the elite because of its popularity with royal families across Europe.  The British royal family has used homeopathy for generations.  King Charles III has endorsed it over the years, and Queen Elizabeth II carried homeopathic remedies on her travels.  Homeopathic physicians have been a part of the royal medical team for over 150 years.  Its appeal has reached far beyond the royal household, with well-known figures such as David Beckham, Tina Turner, various US presidents and Mother Teresa all said to have used it.

  1. Homeopathy was once a major rival to conventional medicine.

The 19th century was considered a golden age for homeopathy with dedicated hospitals established in Europe and America.  There were over 100 homeopathic hospitals across the United States by 1900.  After seeing its impressive results, many medical doctors trained in and practised this holistic system of medicine.  America had more than 20 homeopathic medical schools, including those at Boston University and the University of Michigan.  Until as recently as 2018, homeopathy was available on the NHS in the UK.

  1. Homeopathy has had great success in several epidemics throughout history.

During the 1800s, infectious epidemic diseases such as cholera and yellow fever spread across Europe and America.  Homoeopathic hospitals showed a significantly lower death rate from these diseases than allopathic medical hospitals.  The success of homeopathic treatment during these epidemics played a major role in the rise in popularity of homeopathy during the 19th century.

  1. Charles Darwin used homeopathy when conventional medicine failed to help him.

In the 1830s, Charles Darwin took a trip to South America and returned home in very poor health.  For the next 10 years he tried conventional treatments, but his condition only worsened.  Eventually, he was seen by Dr Gully, a medical doctor who also practised homeopathy.  Dr Gully used homeopathy to treat Darwin and returned him to full health.

  1. The highly profitable nature of pharmaceutical drugs meant that homeopathy had to be suppressed.

In the early 1900s, John D. Rockefeller realised that drugs made from petrochemicals could be patented.  This made them far more profitable than natural medicines.  With the heavily biased 1910 Flexner report on American medical schools, Rockefeller took control of the medical system.  He ensured that only medical schools teaching pharmaceutical-based medicine were well funded.  Homeopathic medical schools had to shut down, and medical doctors were banned from using homeopathy.  Instead of healing people holistically, doctors were now focused on managing symptoms with pharmaceutical drugs.

Due to the clash with the allopathic medical system, even to this day, homeopathy is attacked, suppressed and smeared as being ‘unscientific’.  Nevertheless, more than 200 million users throughout the world know of its remarkable power.
